Linhares is the name of a municipality and its capital in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. 135km north of the capital, it is the largest municipality by area at 4.407,4 km², and has a population of over 124,000 (1995, IBGE).

Linhares geography

Linhares is characterized by undulating lowlands and numerous lakes. The town is situated on the Doce river banks amidst its 64 lakes. 58 of those lakes are year-round, whereas the other 6 are only refilled each year during the flood season.

The climate is hot, tropical, and humid, typically with a dry winter season and more humid summer. The main lakes in the region are: Japaranã-Mirim, Palmas, Durão, Palminhas, Aguiá, Monsarás, Limão, Feia, Combóios, Piabanha, Óleo, Pau Grosso, Terra Alta and Patrão.

Linhares history

The area today known as Linhares was once inhabited by the Botocudo Indians. The town was founded on the 22 of August 1800, but was later destroyed by those indians, when war was declared on them in 1809. This is when it was given the name of Linhares, in honour of D. Rodrigo de Souza Coutinho, Count of Linhares. Linhares only became a municipality in 1945, when it separated from the municipality of Colatina. The area was visited by the emperor Dom Pedro II in 1860, where he visited an island on a nearby lake, which to this day is known as the Emperor's Island.
